The term "under God" was added into the Pledge of Allegiance during the Red Scare of the 1950's, because we needed something to give use hope that we will make it through the tough times. It is not only unnecessary nowadays, it is illegal. It is unconstitutional, public schools are a part of the government and having "under God" in the schools violates the first amendment. I am very lucky that I am a part of a school that bans the Pledge of Allegiance. The choice for the founders of my school was either to have the pledge with "under God" included, or not have it at all. Having "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance is also insulting to some people. Not only do some people not believe in the same god as others, there are people who don't even believe in a god.
