Prohibit state legislators from passing laws that allow business owners to discriminate on the basis of religion.

Created by M.C. on February 21, 2014

This petition was created in response to the recent SB 1062 bill passed by GOP legislators in Arizona, which grants business owners legal rights to discriminate against customers on religious grounds. While legislators have defended the bill by asserting that it was designed to protect business owners' right to exercise religious freedom, SB 1062 is, for all intents and purposes, a pro-discrimination bill. Such bills are in direct violation of the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution under the Equal Protection Clause, which states that all who reside within a given state's jurisdiction shall be treated equally.

The purpose of this petition is to keep legislators from passing bills, that exempt anyone from adhering to the 14th Amendment, specifically on the basis of religion.
