It is becoming increasingly more common for Universities to withhold transcripts from students who have defaulted or even, in some cases, fallen behind on student loan payments. Without this transcript, these same students are unable to secure a job that requires an official transcript, and are, in essence, held in hostage due to a financial obligation. This is unfair at best and unethical at the worst. Without jobs, how can students possibly pay this debt? What's more, after working for multiple years to earn a degree, how is it ethical for Universities to withold proof of this degree--especially when the money is not even owed directly to them? This is an outrage and should be stopped.
