H.R.3261, aka the Stop Online Piracy Act is currently being drafted in Congress. While online piracy is a problem that needs to be addressed, SOPA is not the answer, especially in regards to the chilling effect it could have to freedom of speech and undermining the basic technology that runs the internet. If passed, SOPA would in essence allow the censorship of the internet by the US government, something we as a nation have criticized other nations, such as China, for doing. So, with that in mind, I urge President Obama to issue a promise to veto SOPA or any similar legislation that would allow the censorship of the internet in the United States of America. I urge the President to promise to veto this legislation if passed; it would stifle innovation and creativity on the internet.
