We the people request President Obama and Congress enact legislation to reform our prison systems. Minorities have been disproportionately affected from strict criminal justice laws, but no one is immune. We need to reverse these laws and implement appropriate sentencing for a broad range of crimes. In addition, we need to reduce the mass incarceration of inmates with retroactive implementation of the new sentencing laws for low level & nonviolent offenses defined by the Dept. of Justice.
Repeal war on drug laws:
(1) Minimum mandatory sentencing
(2) Three strikes laws
(3) Other war on drug laws
In addition,
- Assist the mentally ill & drug dependent instead of locking them up
- Reasonable bail amounts & alternatives to lockup for low level & nonviolent offenders who cannot post bail
