Our nation depends on citizens engaged in the right to vote, but our culture often makes it difficult to vote due to work and family demands. Making Election Day a federal holiday honors our nation’s principles and will encourage voting. To avoid the expense of adding another federal holiday to the calendar we should repeal the federal holiday status of Columbus Day and instead make Election Day a federal holiday. History shows us that the explorer called Christopher Columbus today was not an honorable character, and celebrating him does little to honor the principles upon which our nation was founded. Please promote legislation to make Election Day, instead of Columbus Day, a federal holiday, encouraging state and municipal governments to take similar action.
