Martin Luther King, Jr. on the value of education: “I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.”
How would King have felt had he known that the U.S. would one day celebrate his birth by CLOSING every public school and every public library in the nation?
We petition Congress that MLK Day would be better observed by:
1. Keeping public libraries open, if possible with extended hours and special activities to draw the public;
2. Keeping public schools open, with a choice of:
--A field day of community service activities such as those promoted by MLKDay.gov; or
--Special programs on literacy, diversity, and culture; or
--A normal daily schedule.
