In 1987, 211 years after the United States declared its independence from Great Britain, CompuServe declared independence from non-moving web images with the introduction of the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF).
Like the Founders Fathers of the United States who had certain ideas about the country and our Constitution, so too did the Founding Fathers of the GIF, namely that it should be pronounced with a soft "g." GIF with a soft "g" was a declaration of independence from both non-moving web images and an assertion of American ownership of the soft "g," a claim previously held by British "gin."
We request the White House stand with the Founding Fathers of the GIF and adhere to a strict constructionist pronunciation of GIF with a soft "g."
