The nation's energy grid is at risk. If a strong solar flare knocks out the power we are toast. If a nation or terror network with a nuke does a high altitude attack we are toast. If cells of terrorists within the country target multiple transformers at once we are toast. If a group of hackers hacks the grid and shuts down transformers we are toast. How about we make some backup transformers so that we are not toast if any of these things happen. It is estimated that if these events were to take place it would take a year or more to get power back to the nation. A 2008 study estimated if that was the case then 90% of the USA population would die from starvation / looting / societal collapse.
This a nonpartisan issue, its an American issue and it is a matter of life and death.
