The Treasury Department took a loss of about $116,700,000 last year manufacturing and distributing pennies and nickels. Past years have averaged losses of approximately $5*10^7 each year from this process. I propose one of the following:
1. The elimination of the cent. Instead of, for example, "ten dollars and forty cents" we would say "ten point four dollars" with no smaller denominations. Quarters would become worth either $0.2 or $0.3. Dimes would be $.1, Kennedy halves $.5, and dollar coins $1.0. Pennies and nickels would have to be exchanged.
2. Keep the current system, but simply stop manufacturing pennies or nickels. Round all purchase amounts to the nearest 5 cents.
3. Revalue the currency by setting the value of a pre-reform dollar equal to a post-reform penny- etc, divide by 100
