The Electoral College is a relic of the pre-Civil War era, inserted into the Constitution for the purpose of preserving the right of rural states to preserve slavery. It is irrelevant in the modern era, and affords a committed minority the opportunity to thwart the will of the majority by structural actions in the states. There is no compelling argument for keeping this archaic system. We seek the introduction of a Constitutional amendment to eliminate the Electoral College and allow election of the President and Vice President by direct popular vote.
