Police power in the United States has become too abused. Abusive police tactics include, but are limited to, using stun grenades during no-knock warrants, using pepper spray on non-violent protesters and use of deadly force on unarmed, mentally ill and mentally challenged persons. Supreme Court cases Tennessee v. Garner (1985), Graham v. Connor (1989) and Terry v. Ohio (1968) provide a challenging hurdle for prosecuting police abuse. These court cases also inadvertently permit police power to disparately impact indigent and minority populations, thereby threatening the civil rights of every American.
