Whether perpetrated by a family member, coworker, spouse...and whether physical, verbal, or mental; victims of abuse can often find it difficult, for one reason or another, to separate themselves from those that victimize them.
Social influence from peers can be a powerful psychological reinforcement in this matter. If a person can observe other victims separating themselves from their abusers, they may find it easier to visualize how they will do it themselves.
Such a nationally recognized day would also raise public awareness, and prompt them to open their doors and arms to those seeking refuge from abuse.
