HSBC bank has been found to violate multiple laws, yet the bank and the management of the bank are not being prosecuted on criminal charges. This is a strong statement that the war on drugs is directed at the American public rather than those who control the drug trade. The $1.9 billion settlement is five weeks of profits for HSBC. This is "cost of doing business" not a message that we won't stand for money laundering, violating the Banking Secrecy Act and the Trading with the Enemy Act. Prosecuting executives and penalizing those who violate our laws is the only way to send the message that this behaviour isn't okay with the American public.
