The 2nd Article of the Bill of Rights (or 2nd amendment) is quite clear in that the rights of all American citizens "is the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
The founding fathers copied the model of Switzerland where all citizens keep a firearm at home. One of the main reasons that Hitler didn't invade Switzerland in World War II was that Hitler realized that all citizens were armed and it would be a long fight.
Just think about if someone attacks you, that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. The government has no business attacking the constitution and it's amendments.
