Protect Americans from dangerous lightning strikes

The NSA's surveillance programs and the TSA's procedures protect Americans from terrorist attacks—a risk of no more than 1 in 1.7 million. In stark contrast to this, the Federal Government and state governments have done nothing to protect Americans from lightning strikes, which have a much higher risk of 1 in 280,000. While we recognize that the Administration can not pass legislation by itself, we petition the Obama administration to do all it can on its own to protect Americans from the lightning menace and to push Congress to support a comprehensive lightning protection bill, which would, among other things, require all Americans to wear electrically insulated suits when going outside on days when the National Weather Center is forecasting a greater than 20% chance of thunderstorms.
