Without disparaging those who favor same-sex marriage, we request that President Obama support the existing federal law called the Defense of Marriage Act.
We believe that marriage is a permanent bond between one man and one woman, and as such is the unique and irreplaceable foundation of a strong family and society. In a stable home with the presence of both their father and mother in complementary roles, children have the best chance to flourish. Our opposition to same-sex marriage is based not on bigotry but on recognition of these goods.
Moreover, the Justice Dept.'s announcement that it would stop defending the DOM Act offers a worrying precedent: the executive has undermined other government branches by claiming authority to enforce only the laws it chooses.
