The Constitutional Mandate for the Role of Government
Because our government was built upon Christian principles, the historical documents penned by our forefathers, such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, support the biblical guidelines for the role of government, as outlined above. The preamble of the Constitution states that the powers of the federal government are limited to:
1. Insuring domestic tranquility (law and order)
2. Providing for the common defense (national defense)
3. Promoting the general welfare (support scriptural truths)
4. Secure the blessings of Liberty (provide freedom)
First Amendment
- Congress cannot establish a state religion.
- Congress cannot prohibit the free exercise of religion.
- Congress cannot abridge the freedom of speech.
