On January 9th, 2014 7,500 gallons of Crude MCHM leaked into the Elk River in Charleston, WV and contaminated the water for 300,000 people in WV. This is just one example of what happens when companies have no government oversight. The facility in question, owned by Freedom Industries, had not been inspected since 1991. The facility was also located just one and a half miles up river from West Virginia American Water Companies Charleston water treatment plant. West Virginians and people all over America are put in harms way daily due to chemicals used in coal production and natural gas fracking. Very little is known about the toxicity of many of these chemicals and government oversight is needed of the companies that store and the industries that use the chemicals, such as coal and gas.
