Speech code: any regulation restricting speech beyond the legal limitations upon freedom of expression. These policies have become popular among universities aiming to create safe spaces for students by barring “dangerously” offensive language.
Not only do speech codes only treat a symptom of a greater problem, but public universities that restrict speech violate citizens’ First Amendment rights (as ruled by SCOTUS). In concealing this “dangerous” speech, universities deprive students of essential lessons—in complexity of the issue & resilience—necessary to secure real justice against intolerance.
Universities must replace speech codes with policies that defend free speech. As executor of the law, the POTUS is responsible for upholding First-Amendment rights on public university campuses
