The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) has made jailbreaking (removing software restrictions on) electronic devices and modding (altering pre-existing video games) illegal. However, the Library of Congress has already used their power under the law to legalize the jailbreaking of smartphones and tablets.
We call upon the Obama Administration to urge the Library of Congress to use its authority under 1201(a) of the DMCA to protect the jailbreaking of video game consoles and video game modding that are unrelated to the purpose of piracy.
The DMCA should focus on actual piracy, not enthusiasts who wish to fiddle with the code on video games that they legally own. Hobbyist shouldn't live in fear of the possibility of a lawsuit for actions completely unrelated to video game piracy.
