Gerrymandering, in which the boundaries of congressional districts are drawn to give an advantage to one particular group or party, poses an increasing threat to our democracy. The majority of Congressional seats are not competitive, and are comfortably “safe” for the incumbent party. Furthermore, the number of competitive districts has diminished in recent years as gerrymandering techniques have become more sophisticated. This process intentionally undermines the will of the people, and as a side effect, contributes to political polarization and gridlock.
To protect our democracy, we request that Congress consider legislation to remove the responsibilities of redistricting from state legislatures, and instead mandate a more neutral and objective method of drawing congressional districts.
