Despite evidence, the oil and gas industry has maintained that there are no cases of hydraulic fracturing aka fracking contaminating our drinking water. Everyday nearly 2 billion gallons of fluid are injected into 172,000 wells across the country for extraction of oil and gas or for disposal and some of these are known to have contaminated drinking water sources
The EPA is supposed to monitor injection of wastes or returned water for long-term storage wells but has so far failed to do a proper job. Wells are generally not monitored for groundwater and regulations for class II wells have not been updated since the 1980s.
We demand that EPA start monitoring groundwater impacts, update their regulations and be given more resources so they can properly do their job.
