The world in on track to run out of helium in 25 years, which may be sad news for balloons, but also affects a tremendous amount of scientific research, as helium is essential for the use of particle accelerators and the manufacture of fiber optics.
Helium is a valuable resource that we take for granted and there is no good reason to just throw it away as we have been.
