The government has the obligation to do what it can to protect the social security number from identity theft. At least, it can put in place a mechanism to notify the true owner of the number promptly when it is being used by another individual to obtain credit. This could stop the theft before it happens. The tools are available. What is needed is for someone to take the initiative.
