The First Amendment should apply to all media, but often student-produced media gets censored. Currently, only California, Oregon, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas and Massachusetts have active State Legislation protecting the First Amendment rights of student produced media. In some other states, policies are listed in Education codes. In the rest, it is up to the district. Many schools must get their print and video media approved by the administration before they are published. It should not be up to the principal of a school to determine if something is appropriate for publication; it is the right of the students to produce and publish media.
