California legislature has passed assembly bill 1879 with bipartisan support. This bill ultimately labels brand name corporations with responsibility over the treatment of temporary and contingent workers hired by staffing agencies.
On April 3rd, 2014, AlterNet explains this workforce faces fees that bring their pay below minimum wage and are given nearly zero safety or job training. Currently, these problems should be sorted out through a contract declaring "joint responsibility."
Companies and agencies are using the term "joint responsibility" to skirt labor laws, creating a situation ripe for abuse.
The Lane Report states on May 7th, 2014, "Nationally, 3 million people are hired by staffing companies each week," Moreover, ProPublica ranks the US 41 of 43 in temp worker protections.
