Protect the Underwater Forest in the Gulf of Mexico

Created by B.W. on July 30, 2013

A recently discovered grove of 50,000-year-old bald cypress trees, preserved beneath ocean sediments off the coast of Alabama until Hurricane Katrina swept those sediments away, has become a focus for salvage companies looking to harvest the wood for sale. This unique site needs to be protected with the same regulations as those of shipwrecks and other underwater structures.

This petition is to urge the Obama administration to designate this site as a marine reserve.
