We ask the federal government, as the only entity legally empowered to intervene, to reverse legislation recently enacted in numerous states requiring the presentation of a picture I.D. in order to vote: based upon the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These discriminatory laws are the 21st century equivalent to literacy tests These laws, which were preceded by a dramatic increase in the requirements to obtain a picture I.D., were presented as a response to voter fraud which even proponents admit does not exist. These laws were universally passed in conservative Republican Party controlled legislatures. They discriminate against the elderly, urban residents, the poor, or anyone who doesn't drive a car: in short anyone who may not vote for a Republican Party candidate.
