Today, large retail corporations have total control over the lives of their hourly, entry-level employees. With high rates of unemployment and little prior experience needed for these positions, these companies can make outrageous demands of their workforce, leaving employees little choice but to comply. This year, these companies have taken this abuse too far, requiring employees to work on Thanksgiving Day. If these powerhouses remain unchecked, retail employees forced into working 24-hour schedules will become commonplace, and time off for such family-oriented holidays as Thanksgiving and Christmas will be a thing of the past.
We ask for policies that prevent such abuses, encouraging fairer compensation for time worked and discouraging business on these holidays altogether.
