Some addicts do not get help because they can not afford treatment or because they are afraid of going to jail. Jail is for those who commit crimes. Addiction is a disease. You wouldn't lock someone up that has cancer. Save the jail beds for the child molesters and murderers. Most addicts have In jail, you do your time and get out. Once out, the problem still remains. Addicts should not be sentenced to jail time for using alone. They need intense one on one treatment to uproot the problem and address the triggers of their addiction and focus on fixing it. The point of this petition is for treatment centers to offer options that the addict can afford and to offer more treatment related programs in jail if jail is necessary due to a crime committed while using.
