Government sponsored (grants) education is a system from the stone-ages. It ignores any modern technology and does not meet the potential of the era in which we live. It fails to utilize the educational system to it's fullest potential and therefore costs more money than it actually should. Newer technologies exist which could lower the cost drastically of a college education or even remove it (from the student) altogether. Examples Uopeople.org, moodle, edx. If the government would hire out of work professors to run online accredited schools we could teach an entire nation for pennies. The emprical value would still remain and these systems have also been shown to increase learning as they allow students to communicate not just with the instructors but with one another as well.
