provide for and regulate MRI patient safety standards

Whereas, it is estimated that in the US there are 91.2 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans per 1,000 people;
Whereas, MRI’s are typically considered safe because it doesn’t use radiation;
Whereas, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has estimated a more than 500% increase in MRI accidents between 2000 and 2009;
Whereas, the FDA only regulates manufactures not user facilities;
Whereas, user facilities include hospitals and other outpatient programs;
Whereas, the majority of MRI accidents are directly caused by user facilities error and lack of safety standards;
Whereas, there are no federal regulations overseeing MRI patient safety in user facilities.
Therefore, be it resolved that there is a need for regulation to assure MRI patient safety standards in user facilities.
