In a nation where folks like Anderson Cooper are loved and venerated, it seems hard to believe that medieval-style persecution of the LGBTQ community is legal in Uganda.
As Americans, we have a chance to proudly stand up and follow Scotland's example by offering asylum for our friends in Uganda facing persecution. Advocating for gay rights in Uganda is itself a criminal offense, so the LGBTQ community there would greatly benefit from US support.
"Uganda’s new law, enacted by president Yoweri Museveni, calls for life imprisonment for those convicted of engaging in gay sex and creates the offenses of 'conspiracy to commit homosexuality' and 'aiding and abetting homosexuality,' both of which are punishable by seven years behind bars." -Al Jazeera
U.S., offer asylum to gay Ugandans!
