Congress, supported and intimidated by the National Rifle Association (NRA), stripped the CDC of it's ability to research guns and their effects on the community in the 1990's. The CDC’s appropriations bill was amended to include the language that: “None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” As a result, gun lobbyists can make any claim they wish as little privately funded research is available and current.
The NRA intimidation of Congress has prevented the CDC from carrying out their mandate of 'Saving Lives, Protecting People'. It's time for the President and Congress to stand up to the NRA and allow and fund the CDC to do research on guns.
