Provide college loans at the Federal Discount Rate (today 0.75%). Don't treat bankers better than the people!

Created by R.M. on October 04, 2011

Currently Sallie Mae (the quasi-corporate branch of the federal government) has college loans at an 8.5% interest rate. This is an outrage, left over from the damage done by the Bush administration. Why not offer loans at the Federal Discount Rate (currently 0.75%); this would lend critical education resources to college students at the same rate that banks can borrow money. Is it possible that we might value an educated public as much as we value the financial industry (which produces nothing)? Is it possible that Obama might finally become known as the "education president". Dear Mr. President, in considering your legacy, being known as the killer of terrorists might be attractive, but you could form a lasting, honorable legacy as the "education President".
