A national natural disaster response brigade would benefit both returning war veterans and citizens affected by the large scale devastation caused by floods, forest fires, hurricanes, and similar forces of nature. Physically fit and mentally disciplined war veterans would transition to an employment arena where they could hone skills that would make them prime candidates for civilian employment as firefighters, EMTs, heavy equipment operators, semi truck drivers, and skilled trade or construction workers. The bulk of equipment and logistical support would come from surplus military sources. Emergency air transport would be provided by contract with a capable carrier. Operational costs would be shared among the affected geographical areas as well as FEMA and the insurance industry.
