One of the most important documents a person has is their birth certificate. It helps to establish who they are in many cases. Yet, 2 states still will not change the gender marker. Other states will add amendments to your birth certificate. While a rare few just change it completely.
If the federal government can recognize gender change on its own documents for Social Security and Passports then states should also be required to update their documents to match federal documents if they don't already. Otherwise, steps taken to help with discrimination against transgender people fall short when some basic documentation doesn't match who they truly are.
To truly not face discrimination, you need to start with the most basic of documents matching with who you really are.
