Currently the reserve forces are required to maintain a standard of dental care. This standard is, no cavities in order to be in a deployable status. The standard is necessary and understandable. However, the reserve forces are required to pay out of pocket for dental services. Access to an insurance provider for a minimal cost to the service member through United Concordia is provided. The problem is the insurance covers outdated procedures. The result is the Military reserve member is forced to pay out of pocket for the difference = 100's of dollars. It is understandable that people should take care of their teeth but when the military performs annual dental exams and requires dental procedures performed or face punitive actions, it should be covered 100%.
