In 1977 Leonard Peltier was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment for first degree murder in the shooting of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents during a 1975 conflict on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Now in his mid 60s, Mr. Peltier is in failing health and in need of medical attention. He is one of the most high profile federal prisoners in America, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times, and even ran for President from prison.
His plight has become a symbol of injustice worldwide, and an embarrassment to America for over three decades.
