We are requesting that the Obama administration provide funds for peripheral neuropathy research that will lead to better treatments and eventually a cure. Peripheral neuropathy is a disease of the peripheral nerves- the sensory, motor, and autonomic nerves that connect the spinal cord to the skin, muscles, and internal organs. Symptoms may include numbess, weakness, and debilitating pain. An estimated 20 million Americans suffer from this disease which currently has no cure- only medications that treat the symptoms. Unfortunately, those medications only help to a minimal degree and sometimes not at all- leaving many people in excruciating pain. Also, better awareness of this disease is needed. An study in 1999 showed that only 7% of the adults in the US even knew about neuropathy.
