High quality child care can cost more than $2000/month for families with only 1 or 2 children *below the national average of 2.5 kids*, which often leads to one parent, typically the mother, quitting their job because the cost of sending their child(ren) to a quality service provider is greater than their monthly income or so close to it that their work outside the home is no longer cost effective. This is happening to both minimally and highly educated families nationwide, crossing socioeconomic barriers. Government subsidized high quality (emphasis on high quality) child care not only creates jobs in our economy, but provides a strong foothold for gender equality in the workplace. This is an issue at the crux of the glass ceiling, feminism, and overall societal gains in the U.S.
