Plane Transponder issues:
With regard to a pilot’s ability to turn off the plane transponder, articles have been published that manual control is required for two reasons (i) allow the pilot to prevent smoke and/or fire and (ii) interference with ground control.
With respect to the foregoing:
1. How many instances have there been where a transponder caused an electrical issue since 2000? If any, how did turning off the transponder “fix” the problem?
2. What cost, if any, would there be to have the plane issue an electronic signal to ground control notifying same that the transponder has been turned off?
3. If there is a cost associated with issue #2, how does that cost compare to the tens of millions of dollars being spent daily to look for the missing Malaysian Air Flight?
