As the housing market deteriorated, the practice of squatting, or illegally occupying "vacant" homes, has become more prevalent. In many states, once this occurs, it can become a costly and time consuming nightmare to remove said squatters. Veterans are especially vulnerable to this because of the nature of our profession in which we are often away from home for extended periods of time. The last thing that we should have to worry about when deploying to a foreign country is whether someone in our own country will invade our home. Yet, this is occurring often and with increasing frequency. I myself have personally experienced it and I have heard and seen many similar stories. Why are we protecting the illegal squatters and not the Veterans/Service Members in this case?
