Provide non-punitive means for pilots to seek treatment for mental health issues.

Created by J.K. on March 27, 2015

As demonstrated by the Germanwings crash, the current approach for dealing with pilots who are suffering from mental distress (career ending revocation of medical certificates) results in pilots who deny the extent or even existence of their problems instead of seeking appropriate treatment. To think that pilots somehow would not suffer from depression and similar disorders absurd. To think that someone would voluntary end a career that takes years of training and sacrifice is beyond naive. Right or wrong, people respond to punitive systems by trying to not get caught.

And, now, we have seen the results of the current dysfunctional system.

We need to create a system that allows a pilot to get help with mental issues while providing hope that they could someday return to the cockpit.
