The cost of education continues to increase. To limit their children's education debt, many parents chose to take out PLUS loans, only to find themselves unemployed or underemployed in today's economy. Many of these parents in their 50's may never again find jobs that allow them to repay these loans without compromising their retirement. Students with many years of employment ahead are being provided with the means to reduce or eliminate debt. Parents with fewer years and opportunities ahead should be provided with the same accomodations (payments set according to income, loan forgiveness after a set number of years of on-time payments, special assistance to the long-term unemployed).
