Currently, there are droughts ongoing in California, Oregon, and many other parts of the country, and aquifers are being either diminished to record low levels, or dried up completely.
Agriculture consumes the majority of fresh water, upward of 43% of California's water supply. Most companies in this industry spray water into the air, or leave water exposed to the sun, which results in a significant amount of water lost from evaporation before soaking into the soil and getting to the roots.
Drip irrigation would reduce the water lost from evaporation to a negligible amount, providing plants what they need, reducing agricultural businesses' impact on natural water supplies, increase our resilience to prolonged droughts, and allow us to conserve more fresh water as a result.
