Provide a system in major cities to trade in plastic bottles in exchange for subway fare credit similar to Beijing

Created by K.S. on August 29, 2013

This past December in Beijing, the public transportation system installed an 'intelligent recycling machine' at subway stations in the city where people could trade in empty plastic bottles for corresponding fare values to be loaded on to a fare card. Think of the increase in recycling and reduction of waste this could spur if these machines existed in places like D.C., New York, Chicago, and more! Almost every person getting on a subway carries a bottled drink with them, and I'm sure at least 90% would be more than happy to recycle that for fare money than throw it in the garbage. This is an amazing and innovative idea that would do extremely well in America and is well worth the consideration. Thank you!
