More veterans die by suicide than do active servicemen in combat. 25% of the United States' homeless population is composed of veterans. These statistics are sickening. But we can do something about this: post-combat identity reconstruction. Our government needs to put its servicemen in a position to reintegrate into society, to avoid the limbo and uncertainty that arise when one leaves a totalistic environment like the military. By looking to psychological concepts of identity reconstruction, our government could institute a voluntary program of rehabilitation that uses concepts positively adapted from those articulated by prominent psychiatrists such as Robert Jay Lifton. Our servicemen deserve a legitimate chance at a return to normalcy. Encourage our government to give them one.
