Americans are being told of a fiscal cliff. This has been caused by decades of tax avoidance by the biggest corporations and wealthiest individuals. They benefit by using infrastructure and access to an educated workforce, but do not pay for it. They hire lobbyists to buy loopholes that will help them avoid taxes, and congress willingly helps them.
These top corporations receive refunds and shelter US profits overseas as "foreign" income. These corporations are the same ones claiming we need austerity, and cuts to "entitlements" while getting subsidies and in some cases tax refunds.
The wealthiest individuals have trillions stashed illegally overseas, and pay lower tax rates than working people that contribute economically to society.
This fiscal cliff was built by legal tax avoidance.
